This item is a reprint of "Elgin Reminiscences, Making Watches by Machinery 1869, Excerpts from 1873 Elgin Almanac, and Other Sources" . This is one of the best watch books I have ever read. The section on making watches by machinery is reprinted from Harpers New Monthly Magazine July 1869. I learned a great deal about how watches were made in the mid to late 1800s. The reader is personally taken on a tour of the Elgin Watch Co. There is a history of time keeping from sundials, clepsydra, and tall clocks to the fine Elgin pocket watches and how they were made: from making plates, dials, balances, hairsprings, gear cutting, and assembly, to the finished watch. There are illustrations of Key wound Elgin Pocket watch movements, and popular fallacies about watches. This book includes photos of the watch factory, punching wheels, Elgin machine shop, cutting wheel teeth, baking dials, making balances, hairsprings, Elgin cards and posters. This booklet has 31 pages, soft cover, 5.5 x 8.5 inches.
